Chapter 14 Gwithian to Lelant
Instead of walking from Gwithian to Hayle Harbour along the beach / dunes as directed, you can take a route inland half way along the beach in order to visit Phillack Church, and to see the Celtic Cross outside the church and the site of St Piala’s Well.
These are the directions to visit these sights and then to return to your directions in your book:
- From Gwithian Church follow the green footpath sign which leads you to the coast path. If possible, walk on the beach but if it is high tide you can walk along the coast path on the dunes.
- Look out for the lifeguard huts- the first is above the concrete steps at Gwithian Beach. Walk on some distance, noting the hut with the sandy slope to the beach.
- At the next (Beach View) lifeguard hut, which has wooden fences to the beach, find (or stay on) the coast path in the dunes, skirting the chalet park, following the large slate markers until you find the slate saying ‘Mexico Towans’. Go further inland here by a kissing-gate, under some overhead cables, through another kissing-gate and on until you reach the churchyard.
- Note the Celtic Cross by the church door. Cross over to the steep road opposite- St Piala’s Well is just inside the top right hand corner of the hedge.
- Continue down the steep road, turning right at the bottom along the length of St George’s Walk. Cross the bridge and go right on the B3301.
